Shakespeare strikes fear into the heart of many of the nation’s actors – it shouldn’t: you can literally make up stuff that sounds just as good. This week we’re stealing shamelessly from the workshops of Jules Munn, Jenny Rowe and Rebecca Macmillan of The Maydays and playing with the structure of Shakespearean dialogue. It’s fun, sounds awesome and really isn’t as hard as you might imagine. We’ll be getting a feel for the sound of Shakespeare, then experimenting with how to make his voice your own.
Thursday 24th October 7.30-9.30pm 8 Stoney Street Nottingham NG1 1LH Entry Price: £3
The Living Room is a format that uses real life stories as inspiration for scenes… but with a difference… It’s also about conversations between friends. It’s a cross between a chat in the pub and an improv show. It’s a huge amount of fun, easily adapted and so, so easy to learn.
Funtimes start from 7.30pm on Thursday
Thursday 17th October 7.30-9.30pm 8 Stoney Street Nottingham NG1 1LH Entry Price: £3
This week we are playing with soundscapes, building up images and themes using voice and sound. We’ll turn these into big group scenes and use them as inspiration for two and three person scenes. The evening will round off with “The Bat” a longform format with soundscapes as its focus.
The Jam will incorporate techniques from the iO England Intensive. Whether you sing like an angel or croak like a frog, this jam is going to be great no matter how you sound. So come along bring your voices and we will get down with the sound.
Thursday 3rd October 7.30-9.30pm 8 Stoney Street Nottingham NG1 1LH Entry Price: £3
Next week it’s Gorilla Burger – at The City Gallery!
We will get stuck into scene work and do a bunch of montages and ASSSCAT / Armandos…. However, not before we’ve done a couple of new warm-up games that we’ve not done before, just for good measure.
Jamming fun starts at 7.30pm and if you are going to be performing in Friday’s show at Glee it’s a great mental warm-up – although EVERYONE is welcome so come along and do fun stuff. You’ll even find out why this posting is called “Hey Fred Schneider what are ya doin’?”

It’s back! This Thursday is the return of “The Clean Jam”. No sex or bodily excreta jokes! Why? Because diversity that’s why.
Dick jokes are funny, sexual innuendos and puns are funny, various euphemisms for sexual organs are funny, poo and fart jokes are… juvenile.
We know at MissImp that we can do sex jokes. We are actually very good at it. It also helps us go forward in a scene. A sex joke in a scene where the audience is not laughing is a sure way to wake them up. Same thing when you run out of ideas, go for smut, it’s got a good 80% chances of working.
The problem with all that, is that it is easy. Sometimes too easy and, eventually, our audience will realise that we often go for the obvious nob gag. Too much of a good thing can ruin it and too many sex jokes in improv can make all our carefully constructed stories seem kind of cheap. So having mastered the art of smut, it might be time to try something different.
The goal of this jam is to get away from what I call “the dick joke comfort zone” (DJCZ for short). On Thursday we’ll try to diversify our skillset and get inspiration away from the urogenital area. We’ll try to inspire ourselves from other things. Movie styles, things you have read, news stories and any ideas that our mundane life of living under “the man” can give us.
SO NO SEX REFERENCES AT ALL! Any scenes veering towards the sexual will be paused and restarted on a new track.
So that’s what is happening today, I hope to see you all!

It’s time to play! In small teams we’ll do sets of scenes together (like the montages Ben focussed on a few weeks ago), using a suggestion as inspiration for a series of scenes, contributed to and edited by the players.
I’d really like to include a pair of montage teams in this month’s MissImp in Action show at The Corner, so let’s see how they work out tomorrow!

Remember there’s a SHOW next week! MissImp in Action at The Corner – doors open at 8pm! An extravaganza of improv, but remember – we are not at The Glee Club this month, we’re at The Corner.
