Improv Jam: Thursday 18 December 2014 – last jam of the year

This week’s jam: T-Minus 7 Days

This week’s jam artiste is: Santa

It’s the last jam before Christmas – cause for much confused sadfacedness and delight. This week we’re going to make up the words for our favourite Christmas carols, toss some Henrys about and do scenes based on our vaguest memories and ideas of this Yuleish period.

Gorilla Christmas Burger – Thursday 11 December 2014

Christmas improv and Awards

Improv! Prizes! Food! Booze! Charity!

Gorilla BurgermovemberThursday 11th December

Gorilla Burger’s for fun and games – for getting up on stage and improvising with new folks and old friends. Chuck yer name in the hat and bite your nails with anticipation.

Never done improv comedy? Marvellous. Done it before? Also marvellous. Like to drink and watch comedy? Ideal. Bring your own drinks to the Corner and have a laugh.

This month we also have the annual MissImp Awards where everyone gets a gong and a prize from the Table of Joy. Parky will host and there will be literally some prizes available.

This month, we’re also coming together to raise some money for a very special cause. One of our oldest and most loved friends, Lloydie, sadly lost his mum this week. I’d really love it if we could support Lloydie through this tough time by making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society. There will be a collection bucket all night and we’ll be donating the proceeds from the door to the charity as well.

Remember that you should BRING YOUR OWN BOOZE (coz there’s no bar). It’s also a good idea to bring a jumper (it is nearly winter, or something).

Anyone can play. Put your name in the hat and come up and do a scene (or a shortform game from the other hat if you like). We’ll pick names out of the hat and performers will get to try out playing with new people – or even playing for the very first time.

Zero previous experience required.

Improv Jam: Thursday 4 December 2014

This week’s jam: Improv Shufflathon

This week’s jam artiste is: Parky

After the joy of last Friday’s show and the marvellous weekend of musical improv joy, this week’s jam has a tuneful flavour.

This week will be two hours of lovely open scenes. The difference is that they will all be inspired by words, content or music from the 15,802 songs on my iPod. We’ll stick my musical device on shuffle and all our scenes will be based on whatever brand of nonsense pop music that the little MP3 device throws up.

Singing, silliness and a 0.177% chance of some One Direction. What’s not to like?

Improv Jam: Thursday 27 November 2014

This week’s jam: Minutes Three to Six Redux

This week’s jam artiste is: Parky

Lots of our improv scenes start with a ‘hello’ or with two people meeting. Boring! This week we’re going to avoid all those pleasantries and do loads of scenes and games where we meet the two of you part way through your scene.

Imagine that your scene is 10 minutes long and we’re looking at the middle few minutes. Assume you’ve been talking/doing something for a while and don’t end your scene with a conclusion or a goodbye. We’ll end the scene when it feels right and at a time when there’s clearly more to come.

Sound fun? Sure does. Come along and warm your cockles in front of the fire of majesterial improv.

Improv Jam: Thursday 6 November 2014

This week’s jam: A Hat Full Of Fun

This week’s jam artiste is: Marilyn

Dodge the fireworks, lament the continued existence of the House of Commons and come on down to the improv jam.

Games, names, feelings, people, weird stuff and you – all jammed into boxes and redistributed equitably between an evening of games, open scenes and montages to shame a Kung Fu movie. May all your dreams be fulfilled on stage.

Improv Jam: Thursday 23 October 2014

This week’s jam: The Wonder of Hats

This week’s jam runologist is: Martin

Hey, remember that time your name got pulled out of a hat and a game got pulled out of another hat and then you played that game?

Wonder Bread

Relive those simpler, happier days in our jam.  Gasp in childlike wonder – whose name will be pulled from the hat?  Will it be yours?  Yes.  Yes it will.  Will you get to play a game?  Yes.

There are only two truly good and pure things left in the world.  The first is names.  The second is games.  This week’s jam puts them together in beauty.

Then we will drink, and forget.

This week’s jam: Everything Rhymes With Yes

say-yes-and-say-andThis week’s jam meister is : Ben

This week is all about YES! Working in the primary tenet of improv, we are going to play in a really accepting and positive way this week.

We’re going to work on scenes that focus on agreement rather than conflict. We’re also going to do some large group scenes and playing with more experimental games that push agreement to its extremes to see what happens when we just say yes!

Improv Jam: Thursday 2 October 2014

This week’s jam: Eating An Ice Cream On A RollercoasterIce Cream Rollercoaster 2

This week’s improv jam is run by: Parky

This week we’re going to do something we have done before (but it was ace last time so let’s make it ace again).

Eating an ice cream is fun. Riding on a rollercoaster is also fun. Eating an ice cream whilst riding on a rollercoaster? Well, that’s not so easy.

When we play shortform ‘rollercoaster’ games – bad accents, film and theatre styles and so on – it’s easy to get stuck in the rules of the game. All your brain is thinking about are the limits and restrictions that have been imposed on you. But, these games are invariably better when you manage to keep the narrative of your scene going. Don’t repeat everything you’ve said already in a different accent: carry on your scene in Flemish or Norwegian.

So, this week it’s a lot of your favourite short form games – but we’ll be trying to concentrate on developing your scene, keeping your character traits and retaining the story of the scene even though you’re switching from pantomime to Japanese anime. Should be fun, right?
