Gorilla Burger & MissImp Annual Awards – Thursday 8 December 2016

The Annual MissImp Christmas Awards and Party 2016

Thursday 8th December 2016

gorilla-burger-xmas

Games, scenes, food, drink, awards and prizes – all under the watchful eye of your host Parky.

Get up on stage, matched up with our selection of other performers and see what wonders will emerge. This is improvised comedy theatre and together we’ll be brilliant.

All you have to do is stick your name in the hat – the receptacle of randomness – you’ll be drawn, partnered and slung on stage. Your choice of game or scene will guide you in an episode of spontaneous theatre.

Of course, you don’t have to give us your name. You can remain happily anonymous in the audience, settle back with a pint and enjoy the show.

This month, we also have our 5th Annual MissImp Awards. Everyone present will receive an award – all nominated by fellow MissImpers – and you’ll also get a prize from Parky’s Table of Joy.

We’ll also have our annual vote for which two people you think deserve our very special MissImp Outstanding Contribution awards (no one who has previously won can get it again!)

While we’ll also put on some party food and snacks, and the bar upstairs is loaded with amazing boozoids.

Improv Jam – Thursday 28 January 2016

This week’s jam: It Takes Two

This week’s improv jam is brought to you by: NeilIt Takes Two

Character building is important during scenes. This begins by naming your scene partner. When you do this you give your scene partner inspiration as to what to do during the scene. After all, Jane would do something completely different to what Dorothy would do.

We will begin the night with some exercises that practice “Yes and…” as well as naming each other and establishing what people are doing early on in their scenes. The sooner names are established – not only do the performers have an easier time developing their characters – you will find the audience will know more about what is going on as well.

Hopefully this will develop techniques you can call on in future scenes where you will be able to begin character creation as quickly as possible.

Improv Jam – Thursday 21 January 2016

This week’s jam: The Articulate! Jam

This week’s improv jam is brought to you by: Parky Articulate

Christmas is a time for board games and one of the most popular family games in my house is speaky word-thing Articulate! The aim of Articulate! (as the name suggests) is to get the rest of your team to guess what it is that you are describing, without you actually using that word.

So, for example, if your word was “swan”, you might say “it’s a large, white river bird with a long neck”. You might say “it’s a brand of safety matches – something Vesta.” Or you might say “he was England’s spin bowler in the 2013 Ashes series.”

What you can’t say is the word itself or any derivatives of the word. So, if your word is ‘postman’ you can’t say ‘post’ or ‘Post Office’ or ‘posting’ or ‘man’ or ‘mailman’ – and so on.

For inspiration this week, I’ll have the Articulate! cards. You’ll pick a category – people, places, objects, actions, nature or random – and I’ll give you the word from the card. You’ll do a scene inspired by that word but – and here is the key – you can’t actually use the word you’re given (or derivatives thereof). If you do, I’ll end the scene immediately.

Inspiration without actually using the word that inspires you. Fun!

There’s no need to book a slot in advance to perform, we’ll sort out the segments throughout the evening.

Starts at 8pm with periods of reading, drinking and writing limericks. All jolly good fun. See you there!

Improv Jam – Thursday 28 May 2015

This week’s jam: A Million Voices

This week’s jam is brought to you by: Parky

We shall be doing two things at this weeks lovely improv session (it’s open to anyone and so if you’ve not been before or have no experience, do come along).

Firstly, we’ll be looking at the nature of inspiration. It’s easy to open a scene with a line containing the word given as your inspiration but it’s much more fun if you do something oblique or interesting with the word.

If someone suggests an apple, don’t eat an apple and say “What a lovely apple this is!” Take a split second to work out what the word ‘apple’ means to you and then do your scene in New York or be two engineers trying to develop a new algorithm for iTunes.

Secondly, we’ll be then doing a lot of scenes based on inspiration from one of the biggest TV shows of the year. I’ll randomly spin this year’s Eurovision Song Contest CDs and your inspiration will either be a nationality, a strange foreign name or a song title. For example, you may get Portugal’s Leonor Andrade with “Ha um mar que nos separa“. Rich pickings.

Marvellous.

Gorilla Burger – Improv Comedy Carnage – Thursday 9 April 2015

Do it do it do it Do It.

Thursday 9th AprilGorilla Burger2015

The unique improv comedy karaoke night we’ve all been looking for.

Gorilla Burger is a live improvised comedy jamming show for anyone and everyone – all you have to do is put your name in the hat, get it magically drawn forth and find yourself on stage doing something awesome and funny.

This month we give you the Face of Geoff as host, a Hat of Names, a performance by the graduates of our most recent L2 improv course and so much more.

There will also be lots of opportunity to get on stage with plenty of drinking and a great bunch of people. It is always an awesome evening out – whether you take part or not.

This is an excellent opportunity to shake your improv booty or just meet some folks and get a feel for what we do here in MissImp – this is live, unscripted comedy theatre.

You should BRING YOUR OWN BOOZE (coz there’s no bar). It’s also a good idea to bring a jumper/coat/sleeping bag (it is February, you know).

Anyone can play. Put your name in the hat and come up and do a scene (or a shortform game from the other hat if you like). We’ll pick names out of the hat and performers will get to try out playing with new people – or even playing for the very first time.

No previous experience required.

*that really is the name they’ve “chosen”.

Improv Jam – Thursday 5 March 2015

This week’s jam: Where the devil is

This week’s jam is brought to you by: ParkyDevil cat

Specificity is funny. It’s way more funny to tell us in a scene that your going to the Dog and Trousers, not to your local pub. It helps that you tell us you’ve been waiting for 45 minutes, not that you have been waiting ‘ages’. And, it is much funnier to call your dog Mrs Jenkins than it is to call her ‘the dog’.

So, this week’s jam is going to be a lovely set of open scenes but concentrating on the specific detail. Call your scene partner a name. Explain *exactly* where you are (The Cheadle Laundromat, not ‘the launderette’. And use specific numbers, measurements and proper nouns.

I’ll be policing this hard with the bell, so expect to be interrupted if you say you have ‘some money’ or that you’re on the way ‘to work’.

Marvellous. See you on Thursday!
