Improv Drop-In: Thursday 5 April 2018

This week’s drop-in: Puppetprov

Your puppeteer this week is Ben.

From Warhorse through to The Muppet Show and from Muffin the Mule to Yoda, puppets have been part of entertainment for centuries. This week they are coming to improv! Puppets are great because they are blank canvasses we can project onto, and that is part of the fun of improvising as a person too. This week we are going to do some work on bit of basic puppetry skills, and then use them in some improv favourites before we get into having them as characters in scenes.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 22 March 2018

This week’s drop-in: Just Bring it!

Brought to you by Elliott.

This week we present a friendly drop-in loaded with a mix of scenes and games. However, we’re going to be adding some cheeky rules and stipulations to some of games, and throwing in a few games we may never have played! Fear not, all will be revealed; the lovely Nick will be the glamorous assistant, to explain stuff… Including a possible explanation of which games might have cost Elliott money that he could have used to fix his heating.
No need to prepare this week, people – just bring it! And what we mean by it is fun, laughter, and of course, lots of energy.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 15 March 2018

This week’s drop-in: Now That’s What I Call Podracing

Brought to you by Liam.
Don’t worry, we won’t be making you watch Episode I: The Phantom Menace, this week is all about being peas in a pod. While contrast can be incredibly funny, so can matching your scene partner. It’s about paying attention and agreeing, so you can be just like a pair of peas in a pod, y’know, the same (sure, fine – peas in a pod aren’t exactly the same, but you’re going to be, OK, and you, and you).
We’ll be doing exercises to focus us on agreement and listening, then ramp up the action by doing two, then three, then maybe even four-person pea in a pod scenes!
Fancy some really deep reading on peas in a pod… check this out.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 1 March 2018

This week’s drop-in: The First 30 Seconds

Brought to you by Ben.
An improv scene is about the journey, not the destination, because when we arrive… it’s all over. For us to make a journey we need to know where we start from, then we can follow a scene wherever it takes us. A good foundation makes for an easy scene and then we can get to the fun stuff.
This week we are going to focus on strong starts to our scenes: establishing who characters are, what they are doing, where they are doing it, and why they are doing it. We are also going to look at how we take initiations and what we do with them when we have them.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 22 February 2018

This week’s drop-in: Justified

Brought to you by Ben.
Why do our characters do what they do? Is it trauma? Is it a need to be loved? Is it because they want to be the world’s best one man band? When we discover more about our characters we can have more fun with them, our scene partners can give us more things to play with and the audience find it funnier too. We can really get behind heroic characters, boo villainous ones, and laugh at both of them. It also makes your improv richer as well.
So, expect to make up excuses, find interesting backstories and discover strange reasons for things. Whatever happens, you are justified to do what you did.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 15 February 2018

This week’s drop-in: Valentine’s Improv Wishes

Brought to you by Minder.
Improv Wishes is back! For the day after Valentines, Missimp is showing you love by giving you the improv presents you deserve!
How does it work? Send Cupid (Minder) a private message or email [email protected] with something you’d like to do/see at next week’s Jam and it might just happen.
Want to play a specific game that you love? A scene set in space? Play with another performer that you admire? Maybe there is something you would love to do but have never had the chance – This is your chance! Whatever your improv wish, Cupid will try to make it come true!
Send 1 – 3 wishes to Minder via FB private messenger or email by 7pm on Wednesday 14th February for the best chance of having a wish come true. If you don’t send a wish, don’t worry! You can still join in on Thursday and we can try to include any wishes you think of on the night.

What else will there be?
– Music! We will have at the very least, the magical Sam Marshall from Rhymes against Humanity to cheer things up and help with musical improv wishes.
– Chocolate. Because it’s valentines and Cupid might be able to get some on offer on the 15th.
– a chance to dress up fancy/funny/whatever you want – or just show up in your usual clothes and laugh at Lee’s outfit.
