This week’s jam: Take One Thing With You
This week’s jam is run by: Martin.
The first few moments of a scene are the most dangerous. Strong offers and responses in these moments can make the difference between a scene that is enjoyable for players and audience, and one which is hard work. And hard work is bad. When we have to initiate a scene, sometimes we focus too much on coming up with something that will be clever or funny – in improv jargon, we end up in our heads. Heads are nearly as bad as hard work. What we will be aiming at in this week’s jam is ways to make those initial moments of a scene easier by making our initiations simpler. When we go on stage with one thing in our pockets – a feeling, a characteristic, something that will give flavour and meaning to the performance – this can help us to stop thinking about what we should be saying or doing, and to just play.
