This week’s jam: Sound and Fury, Signifying Nothing

A couple of weeks ago I went to the marvellous Broadway Cinema to see a film called The Tribe. Set in modern-day Ukraine, this highly original film followed the fortunes of a group of deaf children at a boarding school. While the film itself was almost unwatchably bleak in places (there was a backstreet abortion scene that is the grimmest thing you’ll ever see on screen) its USP was that there was no dialogue whatsoever during its 132 minute running time. No subtitles, no speaking and no musical score.
What this meant was that for over two hours I had to focus intently on what was going on in order to make some sense of the narrative. And, on the whole, I was able to follow the story even though I don’t understand Ukrainian sign language.
It’s not easy to tell a story with no words, but it is possible. So, on Thursday, we’ll have a bash at telling some tales without speaking. From short, silent exercises to scenes that will be inspired by a random playlist of music, we’ll have a bash at trying to tell some stories without talking. And then, if we have time, we’ll do some standard open scenes with music rather than a word as inspiration.
