This week’s drop-in: Parental Guidance

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be in a one hour MissImp show hosted by our friends at Knaresborough’s Frazer Theatre. The show was part of the town’s FEVA festival, and we were scheduled to be on stage at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon.
What this meant was that our very varied audience included everything from young-ish children right up to a couple of retired folk. So, in order to be respectful to the audience, the entire content of a fast-paced, shortform show was suitable for a family audience. It was honestly one of the best and funniest shows I have been involved with and everyone – kids included – loved it.
Keeping improv family friendly is not as hard as you might think. So, this week, we’re going to run an entire jam where the content should have no more than a ‘PG’ certificate. What does this mean? Well:
- Discriminatory language or behaviour is unacceptable, unless clearly disapproved of
- Mild bad language only
- No detail of potentially dangerous behaviour that children are likely to copy
- No glamourisation of realistic and accessible weapons (e.g. knives)
- Mild sex references and innuendo only
- Frightening sequences where characters are in danger should not be prolonged or intense
- Violence will usually be mild
Generally speaking, if you concentrate on relationships and emotions, and cut out the swears, you’re likely to be fine. If Jamie, Emily, Di and I can manage an hour show for families, you can manage a few scenes!
Important note: I am going to be deadly serious just for a minute. If you fancy coming along to the drop-in to be mischievous, and to push the boundaries, and to ignore the theme of the session and see what you can get away with, I’d honestly rather you left it for another week. If you’re going to be respectful of the content of the drop-in, and throw yourself into the innocent nature of it, I really look forward to seeing you! For one week only, I will end your scenes and ask you to be respectful if you aren’t going to play nicely.
