Improv Drop-In: Thursday 4 January 2018

This week’s drop-in: Making the Basics Fun

Brought to you by Lloydie.
New Year – and a chance to go back to the building blocks of improv and remembering why we love improvising in the first place.
We are going to take everything right back to the first things you learn in improv. For seasoned performers this is a great refreshers, for new/newer people, it’s a chance to get acquainted with some of the core skills. However, for everyone, it’s a chance to discover/re-discover the fun.
Get back to basics and get to the heart of the fun over two hours of improv drop-in.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 21 December 2017

This week’s drop-in: Objectify

Brought to you by Liam.

Aren’t things brilliant? Something to look at, to talk about, and they give your hands something to do. They’re even great when they’re just imaginary, because they provide all of those opportunities, and more. Reaching for an object in a scene allows you to reach into your mind and find reasons, histories and motivations for your actions, the object’s presence and meaning in a scene. Or it might just be something to lob at your scene partner.

This week we’re working on using and maintaining objects and things in our scenes. It will be fun.

Also, it’s the last drop-in of 2017!

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 7 December 2017

This week’s drop-in: Santa Grants Your Christmas Wishes!

Brought to you by Minder.

We’re kicking off the first Jam in December with a Christmas Extravaganza! This is your chance to ask Santa for an improv present!

How does it work? Send Santa (Minder) an email to ImprovWish @ gmail.com with something you’d like to do/see at this week’s drop-in and it might just happen.

Want to play a specific game that you love? A scene set in space? Play with another performer that you admire? Maybe there is something you would love to do but have never had the chance – This is your chance! Whatever your improv wish, Santa will try to make it come true!

Send 1 – 3 wishes to Minder by email by 7pm on Wednesday 6th December for the best chance of having a wish come true. If you don’t send a wish, don’t worry! You can still join in on Thursday and we can try to include any wishes you think of on the night.

What else will there be?

  • A Missimp band – For Christmas songs AND to help with any musical improv wishes
  • Christmas Tree shaped (triangle) snacks – Lee has offered to bake – if anyone else wants to contribute, we won’t complain!
  • Missimpers dressing up as elves, Santa and Christmas plague doctors – feel free to join in by dressing up in something Christmassy/amusing.

Gorilla Burger: Improvised Christmas Carnage – Thursday 14th December – The Malt Cross

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 30 November 2017

This week’s drop-in: Just the Two of Us

Brought to you by Ben.

Two person scenes are often the core of any improv show. They’re where we can really relish our stage time, work closely with our scene partner, and are incredibly fun. This week we are going back to basics with a look at first principles, and then plenty of time to play.

There may be a little bit of side coaching but mostly we’ll be jumping into scenes and throwing suggestions around like snowballs.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 23 November 2017

This week’s drop-in: Tell me what you want. What you really really want.

Brought to you by Ben.

Ever find yourself halfway through an improv scene wondering what to do next? The back and forth you built up with your scene partner has ended and you are stuck umming and ahhing? How about at the start of a scene once you know the context and you are feeling adrift in the world?

This week aims to get to the heart of what your characters want: their hopes, their desires, why they want them, and what they’ll do to get them. When we know what our characters want, then the way ahead is clearer, and it’s easier to find comedy and drama in the scenes.

Improv Drop-In: Thursday 16 November 2017

This week’s drop-in: Feelin’ Funny

Brought to you by Liam.

When improvisers are asked “Why do you do improv?” the answers are often the same: “to support each other”, “accept and build”, “to find a group mind”, “to meet other like minded (and often weird) people”.  But there’s something we don’t talk about as much, something is integral, but sometimes it’s almost as if we dare not speak it: we really enjoy making people laugh! And part of making people laugh is being funny.

So this week we’re gonna be working on just that: being funny. But funny in an improv context is a weird one – so we’ll have no jokes or puns, we’re gonna build our funny together through a mixture of fun exercises, and good old-fashioned scene work!

Maybe with something about how we’re told to not be funny in there too? I dunno. Spruce it up, but that’s the vibe!

This week’s drop-in: Miss Shakespeare

Brought to you by Helen.

An evening of creative insults, extended analogies, hyping up your hyperbole, and creating hilarious scenes that build up layer upon layer of DISASTER! Yes, it’s Shakespeare, but all made up. You will enjoy it.

Prepare your tongue for twisting, your vocabulary for enlargenating, and your heart for melodrama.

Improv Jam: Thursday 24th October 2013

This week’s jam: Ooooh, Shakespeare

This week’s improv jam is run by: Nick

Shakespeare strikes fear into the heart of many of the nation’s actors – it shouldn’t: you can literally make up stuff that sounds just as good. This week we’re stealing shamelessly from the workshops of Jules Munn, Jenny Rowe and Rebecca Macmillan of The Maydays and playing with the structure of Shakespearean dialogue. It’s fun, sounds awesome and really isn’t as hard as you might imagine. We’ll be getting a feel for the sound of Shakespeare, then experimenting with how to make his voice your own.
