Musicians for Improv

Musicians for Improv - Free Jam

Sunday 12 June 2022

A chance for instrumentalists to apply their skills to musical improv, and to share knowledge on how to improvise songs.

  • This jam is free, though places are limited, and you do need to book, please.
  • There will be no formal teaching in this session.
  • This is not a session for people to try the singing side of musical improv – this jam is aimed at instrumentalists.
  • We will explore how to improvise the music for a song, both in terms of making offers for the singers and in responding to what the singers are doing.

You do not need to be an expert musician, or an improviser; we ask you to have some musical skills, and an understanding of song structure, chord progressions and genres. You will need to be supportive of others, keen to listen and engage, and willing to experiment with your music.

What is improv?

Imagine watching a theatre scene, but it hasn’t been written yet, so the actors are discovering the characters and the story at the same time as the audience.

What is musical improv?

Basically, making up songs – singers think of the lyrics as they go, while instrumentalists make up the music as they go along.

What does an instrumentalist do in musical improv?

Mainly it’s providing the backing music to songs, making it up as you go along, inspired by and reacting to what’s happening on stage. Sometimes you might also provide a background soundtrack for a spoken scene.

FREE, but places are limited – please book!
